What is Postal Code? (Post Code)

A postal code (known by various names in various countries as a post code, PIN Code, postcode, or even ZIP code) is a series of letters and/or digits added in the end to a postal address for the purpose of sorting mail.

The postal code usually help faster delivery of mails and is hence used by all countries for postal mail transaction.

The first country to bring this into practice was Germany. They introduced the postal code system, in 1941. The United Kingdom followed with the invention in 1959 and then followed United States in 1963.

Postal codes in the UK are referred as ‘postcodes’, and these were introduced from 1959 to 1974. Most big cities already had postcodes at that time – London was first divided into 10 postal districts in 1857-’58 and subdivisions were numbered in 1917 (e.g. W1, SE2, etc.) London still retains this system, while pre-existing city postal areas elsewhere were incorporated into the new system.

Outside the London Postal Area, UK postcodes have an identical format, generally consisting of two sets of characters separated by a space
